Fantastic 4 First Steps; The King would Approve

Critics are right to suggest this was a dull movie.

It simply couldn’t compare with the drama of the original comics, which I read as they came out.

Notably, in the end it was the power, the rage, of the women, an inexplicably female Surfer and Sue Storm between them, which defeated Galactus.

The story goes that Kirby, creator of Big Barda, husband to Ros, was forever trying to give the women in his comics more responsible substantial roles but was thwarted again and again by Stan Lee rewriting their parts to make them simpering helpless subordinates to the strong, powerful men.

I’m sure, then, this role reversal was an aspect which Kirby would have approved of.

Nice to see an almost unrecognisable Natasha Lyonne popping up briefly in there too, in the role one feels is destined to become Ben’s love interest in any sequel.
